Yum – Ginger Souffle sounds already delicious and my skin is definitely enjoying the treat every time I use Origins ginger body wash and creme. Both the wash and the souffle have a creamy soothing texture with a crispy- fresh ginger and citrus scent. You probably figured that I have a love for Ginger, hence the name for this blog. Here is why: ginger is anti-inflammatory (=anti breakouts), it is also anti-bacterial (fabulous remedy for a sore-throat), it stimulates the metabolism and it contains enzymes that help fight free radicals. Other ingredients include Grape Seed Oil, Olive Oil, and Apricot Kernel Oil to soothe and nourish the skin as well as Lime and Bergamot essential oils to energize and calm.
Are you looking for your perfect mineral face sunscreen that doesn’t leave your face either all white or oily? My greatest discovery this weekend is Coola, a San Diego based sun care brand that holds what the name promises. This sunscreen is pretty cool for a few reasons: it is 70% organic using Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as sun blockers, it is produced in facilities powered with solar energy, and it comes in a sleek package which is recyclable and biodegradable. The lotion has an amazingly light and silky texture (I want to reapply it all the time just for the feeling of it!!) and absorbs immediately into the skin leaving the face with an even tone and matte complexion. This sunscreen is water-resistant and has a broad spectrum SPF which means that it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Inactive ingredients with great skin-benefiting properties include Shea Butter, Cucumber extract, Glycerin, Plankton extract, Evening Primrose and Rose Hip oil. Rose Hip oil repairs scar tissue and helps against hyper-pigmentation, sun damage and aging.
I absolutely love this 360 degree approach to do things stylishly and health consciously at the same time. The products are never animal tested and the company donates a portion of their profits to an organization named Save Our Seas, which is dedicated to educate and research about preserving and restoring the world’s oceans.
For everyone who prefers spray to lotion: the Coola also has cocktail inspired sun sprays with Citrus Mimosa and Pina Colada scents..
Where to buy:
Coola sunscreen products can be found in stores and spas in the US and Canada, the Caribbeans and a few other countries around the world like Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates and online on Amazon:
Mostly I like to share good and important facts about cosmetics on this blog. So it seems about time to explain why I think natural skincare is so important and why some ingredients are better than others. The first absolute no-go-ingredient is Aluminium.
This morning my mom called to tell me that her friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctors named the cause being too much aluminium deposits in her body from her deodorant. This is a shocking evidence of something that I have thought about for some time, but even more shocking for me is that she used crystal deodorant for years, believing – like I did until now – she is doing her body good. I just raved about crystal deodorant last week and talked about my thoughts on Aluminium causing cancer. Now I have to revise the post. Crystal deodorants don’t contain Aluminum Chlorohydrate or Aluminum Zirconium which is in most other deodorants but they do contain Alum, which is a form of Aluminium and is said to cause Alzheimer’s desease and cancer. Some people argue that this type of Aluminium can’t actually be absorbed by the body. I am not a scientist, so I can’t tell, but if specialized doctors in a German hospital say this is the case, I better believe it. Since I am not super radically “eco”, I also need to ask myself if it’s really worth it to go crazy about natural deodorant while living in a world that exposes us to toxins daily? I believe in a healthy balance and I try to keep toxins away if possible. This means not feeding my lymph nodes with Aluminium daily, because this is the place where breast cancer is likely to spreat. So now I am back on the hunt for antiperspirants that make me smell great all day and not deodorize my way to breast cancer. Has anyone tried Dr. Hauschka or Burt’s Bees deodorants? Please comment if you can recommend a natural 100% Aluminium free deodorant!!!
1. Dr. Organic Virgin Olive Oil Shampoo
I’ve written about another Dr. Organic product before, I actually discovered this brand on my recent trip to London and fell in love with it, because it’s inexpensive, simple and the products provide great results. During my two days there of crazy shopping and hunting for skin care, I discovered that the UK has a lot of amazing organic skin care brands. So be sure to expect reading about more UK based brands. It’s not easy to find an organic shampoo that also works. Most of the time it doesn’t really foam or it is tough to wash it out again. Dr. Organic Virgin Olive Oil uses bioactive ingredients and does actually foam, naturally. The oleic acid in the olive oil moisturizes and cleans the hair while nourishing it with vitamins and antioxidants. If you’re sceptical of using olive oil shampoo because you’re afraid to look like you haven’t washed your hair in a week afterwards, remember my post about oil cleanse: oil dissolves oil.
2. Dr. Organic Virgin Olive Oil Conditioner
Again, organic conditioners usually leave my hair really dry and strawy – not so this one. The oil helps to soften it, just be sure to work it into your hair, it might take a little longer than regular conditioner but it works.
3. Shea Moisture Organic Yucca & Baobab Anti-Breakage Masque
I am always straightening my fine and slightly wavy hair, so it get’s easily dry and frizzy. This masks makes it incredibly soft again with ingredients from Africa like shea butter, yucca and baobab. Baobab, a tree growing in Africa and Australia is known as the tree of life due to its longevity. The instructions say to use the mask twice a week for 5- 30 minutes. I realized that leaving it in the hair for 2-3 minutes while under the shower is already enough to get my hair smooth and shiny and if I leave it on for 30 minutes my hair does feel stronger and less frizzy for a few days.
The sun was out this weekend all over the United States and Europe with temperatures here in New York over 100 degrees. Like everyone else, I just try to cool down by the pool or at the beach. I have pretty tanned skin naturally, but when I use regular sunscreen I usually get oily skin and breakouts, and sometimes even sun allergy caused by all the chemicals ingredients. Using carcinogenic chemicals to protect the skin from too much cancer-causing sun is contradictory. So switching to natural sunscreen was a necessity for me this summer. Unfortunately natural sunscreen is not very attractive as it usually leaves a thick white layer on the skin which not only let’s you running around looking like a ghost all day but also messes up your clothes. I packed three different sunscreens for the weekend to see which works best: J.R. Watkins, Alba Botanica, and Neutrogena.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is not really natural, but at least it is PABA (Para-aminobenzoic acid) free and it absorbs relatively easy without leaving an oily layer.
My favorite is Alba Botanica Very Emollient Natural Sunscreen. I tried the sport and the lavender version and liked them both. They are very easy to apply and absorb quickly.
Tip: Make sure to not stay in the sun to long, remember to reapply and take Calcium to avoid sun allergies. Happy healthy tanning!
I always carry l’Occitane hand and foot cremes with me. The tubes are pretty and have the perfect size to fit in any purse. The cremes are very rich and nourishing, so you really only need a small amount to get cracked and dry skin soft again.
The foot creme works amazing with 15% shea butter and essential oils from lavender (this freshens up tired and smelly feet!), rosemary, coconut, and sunflower.
In the winter I usually use the shea butter hand creme which is enriched with 20% shea butter, honey, almond extracts and coconut oil and in the summer the lavender creme. Since the lavender scent helps to keep mosquitos stay away is especially good for summer evenings.
L’Occitane has retail and online stores all over the world.
We all know that the Dead Sea in Israel and Jordan is famous for its healing properties due to the high level of salt and minerals. For thousands of years people have made pilgrimages to bathe in this lake to recover from arthritis, eczema and other ailments. Dr. Organics Dead Sea Mineral Mask uses dead sea salt and mud as its main active ingredients. Other notable ingredients include Kaolin clay, known for its detoxifying and purifying properties (which is good for oily skin), algae, plankton and pine oil. The mask can be used twice a week if left on for 10 minutes and then washed off with a cloth. I prefer it to other masks as it doesn’t dry and I don’t experience this tense sensation. It feels soft and is also super easy to wash off. I’m impressed!
Dr. Organics is a UK brand but can also be purchased online Holland & Barrett (international shipping is £ 6.95)

Sometimes this nightly procedure of removing make up, cleansing your face, and moisturizing can be really tiring, especially if you’re already exhausted and just want to fall into bed. I can be super lazy when it comes to removing make up and on these days I don’t want anything to take longer than 10 seconds. This new Fresh Cleansing and Make Up Remover is, as the name already suggests, a cleanser and a make up remover in one. Perfect for the lazy mood. It contains 86% natural ingredients including coconut oil and tara seed oil. I like that it shows a clear list of the ingredients PLUS their origin. This is how it should be!
I usually never wear make-up except for my eyes, but when I first tried it, I was coming from an event and had tons of make up on. I was very surprised how easy it is to wash all the make up off at once, including mascara! It is very mild and easy to rinse off, doesn’t foam and also doesn’t run into the eyes. It might be a little drying so I’d recommend to use it only on your lazy days.
Buy it in Germany over amazon.de
I discovered these soap bars from Southampton Soap Company in a tiny book store in Sag Harbor, NY and immediately fell in love with them. Their soaps are all 100% natural and hand-made with organic coconut, palm, and olive oil. My absolute favorite this summer is Seaside Spa which is made out of water from the Atlantic ocean, sea clay which helps remove dirt and toxins and sea algea which has antioxidant and nourishing properties. Use it under the shower after a day on the beach and you actually feel like you’ve just been to the spa!
Do you often have dry skin on your legs after shaving?
Shaving gels that foam are fun, but they contain lots of bad stuff like Sodium Laureth Sulphate which is actually a skin irritant and carcinogen. So when it comes to shaving sensitive skin and your most intimate area, would you really like to get in contact with cancer causing ingredients? Me neither … Kiss My Face Cool Mint shave cream works really well without foaming and it has a super nice fresh scent. It contains only natural ingredients like arnica, aloe vera, coconut and olive oils, and sage which all help to make my skin feel moisturized and incredibly soft after shaving. It took me some time to get used to shaving without a thick layer of foam, but now I absolutely prefer it!
What shaving lotion are you using?
